Equipment
Events are divided into two categories and age groups similar to classical and barefoot. In
the first category: social class category, skiers must use conventional equipment with a 23
meter towline and two skis or a slalom ski.
For the other category including all age groups, the skiers can use speed skis and a longer
rope. Speed skis are longer, wider and thicker to eliminate any flexibility that would hinder
passage through the wake caused by wind or other boats. Towropes can be up to 75 meters in
length to keep the skier far from propeller wash at high speed. These towropes have two handles
that the skier can hold behind his back with one hand, as a support device, while the other
hand hold the rope in front to maintain his balance and absorb any slack in the rope.
When falling, the skier immediately releases handles held behind his back. All crew must wear
life jackets.
The use of helmets was introduced gradually, and is now compulsory in all classes and
safety goggles are recommended. The helmet is orange in order to be seen during falls.
The start on a speed ski may be difficult, it is important to practice the start to be in control.
